Novica and its partners are actively working together to change the handmade world for the better through powerful, effective relationships that encircle the globe – sharing specialized expertise and impassioned workforces to uplift artisans and their communities.
By facilitating long term economic sustainability for artisans, Novica also intentionally aids in the preservation of traditional arts and cultures, while at the same time helping bridge social and cultural divides around the globe – increasing understanding and appreciation between diverse peoples through art. On any given day at Novica.com you’ll find more than 70,000 handmade works of art for sale, including many limited edition and one-of-a-kind offerings, all handmade by featured artisans.
Novica’s commitment to doing good includes sustainability. We believe that supporting the world’s artisans is basic to that commitment. The handmade way is the non-factory way.
Most Novica artisans use traditional production methods – the same methods that allowed their ancestors to practice crafts in harmony with the environment, transforming locally gathered materials without electricity, using hand tools and manual looms, for example.
Novica also particularly supports and encourages artisans who use natural, sustainable materials – including vegetable dyes, wool, jute, hemp, maguey, water hyacinth, grass and palm fibers, gourds, coconut husks, rice and saa papers, and sustainably harvested woods, for example.
Novica’s Eco-Friendly collection showcases thousands of these popular, earth-friendly creations.
While browsing the site, customers view portraits of each artisan and enjoy reading about their lives, hopes, and dreams. Because of this, Novica shoppers connect on a truly personal level with the creative individuals who beautify their lives.
"Novica gives hope to artisans – gives artisans a reason to dream again, and a reason to express their creativity. Novica typically makes providing for their families possible. Novica’s impact continues to grow – with so many more lives remaining to touch. I am very proud to be a part of this great mission. The depth of our impact ignites me.” --Elizabeth Attoh, NOVICA Country Manager, Ghana, West Africa
Why artisans believe NOVICA should win the Most Impactful People award:
Abdul Aziz Mohamudu, Ghana, mask-maker
“The education of my kids matters to me a lot, and my Novica sales have helped me pay for their school fees. From these sales I pay my rent, and also recently purchased land and have begun building my own house. I dream of opening an art and craft institute to train youth, with the aim of reducing poverty. My children are all in school and I also pay the living costs and schooling of four orphans, from the level of primary to senior high school. Before joining Novica, I was in crisis. Novica gives me peace of mind, supporting me through my sales and with zero-interest microcredit loans when needed. In my community I have gained increased respect. People now come to me with their worries – about illnesses, unemployment. I try to help as many of these people as possible, including employing some in my workshop. Novica has been very helpful to artisans at the grassroots level.”
Kathiana Quispe, Peru, handmade handbags
"In the midst of the pandemic, I was able to sustain myself financially only because of my Novica sales. I am a single mother of three children. Thanks to my sales at Novica I can afford my children's education – and provide work for other people. When I meet new business people I immediately gain their respect because I sell at Novica. This is a very important prestige, helping me to continue growing professionally. Novica completely changed my perspective on the profitability of artisanry, and I will always be infinitely grateful."
Made Wirata, Bali, wood carver
“Joining Novica 20 years ago was my best decision. How can a small sculptor like me receive a regular income, when usually a sculptor's life is swayed by uncertainty? Since joining Novica I have succeeded step-by-step in achieving my dreams. The increase in sales every year allowed me to save to build a simple house for my small family, pay for my children's schooling, and pay off debts. Before joining Novica I marketed my work in art shops near my house. However, the results were insufficient to meet my family's needs because of uncertain sales and unstable financial conditions. I have also been able to hire friends and neighbors to help me, so I have helped the economy of the people around me. They are not only friends to me, but also partners in achieving my success with Novica. I want to say thank you to Novica for helping me market my crafts. Not only for the income I receive, but for the positive reviews left by customers who enjoy my work – this also became my enthusiasm and motivation to be more productive. I am also grateful for Novica's guidance in managing my business.”
Elena Ixtamer, Guatemala, handwoven apparel
“Weaving by hand is an art that represents us as Guatemalans. Due to the complexity of our traditional weaving, and because it is part of our traditions and customs, it is also part of a family legacy. I dream of knowing that my designs are highlighting feminine beauty in other countries, and that women know my weaves are made with love and dedication. Since starting to work with Novica my life has changed. Thanks to Novica, I can support and feed my family. I began working with Novica in 2020, at the start of the pandemic. My sales grew rapidly. I involved my family in the business and started paying other artisans to weave. Since we earn a fair price for our work, I have managed to pay the artisans well and on time. Our family income increased, and we were able to pay off debts. We had debts because, before Novica, sales were inconsistent. It was difficult for us to pay for our basic daily needs. We’ve also managed to pay my son's tuition. Now we are up to date, and that gives me a lot of peace of mind. I am most grateful to Novica for the orders they generate for me.”
Gulam Rasool, India, soapstone carver
Now in his 80s, Gulam is one of the oldest Indian artisans on Novica. "I have worked with Novica since 2004. You have given me a platform to exhibit my craft to the whole world. My stone carvings are appreciated, and your purchases helped me to achieve success in life. My work increased, and I was able to have a stable income. Now I have fifteen artisans working with me. I was able to get my daughters married off. For me, that was a great achievement. After years of hard work, I was honored with a state award for excellence. Today, I am proud to mention that I have earned a name for myself in the art of jali stonework, and I am associated with a government certified center where I have trained 50 to 60 workers to date. I would like to thank everyone for your support. You have helped all of us to lead a better life."
Ila Suleyman, Ghana, jewelry artisan
"Since I joined Novica in 2012 and with the support of my sales I was able to take care of two of my extended family’s children through junior high school, and now my own two kids — a boy and a beautiful girl. I’ve also bought 1 acre of land with the support of my Novica sales. Before, I couldn’t support my family well. But now I am supporting many of my extended and nuclear family, and have even been able to support others in need during Covid-19 by providing food to eight homes in my community. With the support of Novica sales, each year I help a few farming families in the north, purchasing and distributing fertilizers. Novica is a great source of livelihood for me. I will continue to do my best."
Delfina Ruiz, Mexico, Zapotec wool rugs.
"This is the art my parents dedicated their lives to, and it's what I know best. This beautiful tradition is in my veins. We have worked with Novica for more than 20 years now, which has taught me in a very special way to listen to my heart. Thank you for the confidence and perseverance in being part of our growth process. Thanks to you, we are creating more and more handwoven rugs. This has given us the opportunity to provide work for more people who are equally passionate about the traditional Zapotec loom. You have shown us a new market with many opportunities to continue growing and showing the traditions that define us."
Chaloemphon Krasear, Thailand, handmade leather goods
“Before Novica, I had financial difficulties, and couldn't pay the installments on my first house. Five or six years ago I had enough income from selling with Novica to pay off a new house, where I live with my family. In addition to Novica promoting my products for me, there is also another great project that helps my work flow smoothly – the zero-interest microcredit loan project. I use this money for my working capital, including buying materials in bulk to reduce costs. I am grateful to be Novica's partner. I would like to thank all the customers who have always supported me. Our family is very happy. We have a good quality of life. You make us feel we are valuable. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Francis Agbete, Ghana, Woodcarver
“Since I joined Novica in 2003, I have succeeded in gaining international recognition. This has shaped my life. The steadiness of my Novica sales has resulted in my family being able to rely on me, since I am now better off financially. I've improved my skills, purchased better hand tools and raw materials. I completed a higher education in Hospitality and Tourism, and two of my siblings are now graduates through my support. All my children are in good schools, at various levels – elementary and secondary schools. This has been possible through my Novica sales. My financial situation has improved dramatically since I joined Novica. In my community we have set up an association meant to check the welfare of the people in the community, and because of the respect I have earned through Novica, my positive attitude, and the way I handle the affairs of my family, I have been made leader of that group.”
Jesus and Roxana Hernandez, Mexico, alebrije sculptors
These talented alebrije artisans launched their small artisanry business with big dreams, but without many customers. "We became discouraged. The first two years were rough for us." Through Novica, they have experienced a significant increase in sales. “We are very happy to be with Novica. Thankfully, we are now able to offer work to our artisan neighbors. This is important in preserving our culture and artistic tradition, as well as generating a source of income. But even more than that, we’re helping stop the migration of artisan to cities to find work – and we contribute toward making our community more prosperous."
Johnny Jimenez, Peru, handcrafted leather
“Novica has changed my life. In 2016 we began to improve my house, which before was practically made of cardboard and wood. Today we have a beautiful family home thanks to my sales at Novica. I am extremely grateful that today I have financial peace of mind, and the gratitude of providing my children with an education."
Made Wardika, Bali, jewelry artisan
“Thanks to Novica I have been able to provide financial comfort to my family. I can make ends meet and give jobs to the people around me. I can also provide a proper education for my children and make a comfortable home for my little family. Now, I have even bought land which I will use in the future to build a larger shop. Before joining Novica, I often lost money because of orders that were not paid for by my customers. Those were the darkest times in my family. Luckily the nightmare has passed, changing to a bright future. Everyone who works with me is my team. My success is their success too. The most important thing is that I can help the economy of other families now too. And even though it's not much, I can also afford to donate to the temple where I live. I think the benefit we give to those around us is the respect we get. I've also received a lot of business guidance from Novica.”
Fai Sareeyakarn, Thailand, gemstone jewelry
“Selling jewelry through Novica allowed me to let go of my concerns about the unstable cost of living. I've been doing what I love and still continue to earn more. The most important advantage of this work is that I have more time to spend with my children and family. I'm very happy that I don't have to go away to work. Before I joined Novica, I couldn't give my children the choice of what they wanted to study, and was unable to allow them to experience what they want. My daughter loves learning English very much. I think she has a talent for this, and so does my son. I’ve been able to encourage them to study the English Program, which has a much higher tuition fee than the normal program. As for my daughter, she is a first year student at Bangkok University. I would like to send a million thanks to Novica for dramatically changing every aspect of my life and my family.”
Estuardo Jimenez, Guatemala, silver and jade jewelry
Estuardo is a second generation Novica artisan. “To all the Novica family, thank you from the bottom of my heart for believing in me from the beginning. Along the way I have been learning and understanding more about the market. I am also grateful for the freedom Novica has given me to modify my catalog and improve it with more beautiful designs. The land on which my house is built today was given to me by my parents many years ago – they were able to buy it because of their own sales through Novica. However, I was insecure about starting to build what would become my own home. Today I see my house, completed this year, and I thank God because he has given me the gift of being an artist, my parents for their tireless work, for their effort and dedication so that my family has gotten ahead, and to the Novica family for trusting in my art, in my talent as an individual, and for always encouraging me to give my best, to improve day by day. And for all the business tools Novica has shared with me.”
Liliam Vivan, Brazil, handcrafted gemstone jewelry
“Before Novica, I had bank debts, and depended on family members to support me. I worked for free, trying to establish partnerships with companies – but my work was never recognized. Novica was a watershed in my life, artistically and financially. Because of my success at Novica, and the 100% increase in the visibility of my pieces, I always get emotional when talking about this partnership. I have evolved so much since we connected. Gratitude to this welcoming company of serious principles, which has the noble mission of making the work of artisans and designers known and recognized, and making our lives better.”
